Believe me, when I tell you that once you start watching variety shows you will not get enough of them and just continue finding new shows, thus finding new bands and this continues to be a never-ending circle, a vicious circle and you will never get out. This is basically how I got into K-Pop bands from back in the 90s. I'm sure everyone my age knows 90s music, at least from their own country and American music from the 90s (and early 2000s). I'm a 98-liner so I can't really say I'm a 90s kid but - and this is very important to me - I still belong to the 90s! And, as I found out quite a while ago and which has been confirmed on multiple occasions, I love 90s music. I wasn't exactly surprised to find out that I enjoy K-Pop from the 90s as well. This is what everyone calls the 1st-generation K-Pop idols because back then all of that fandom-thing (concerning K-Pop groups) and so on really started. Again, I was not alive for most of the 90s and I only got into 90s music in 2015, which obviously is not the 90s, so not everything I say might be accurate. I don't know about all the bands from back then but I'd say that I know the most popular ones and the most popular songs from back then. (This is an explanation about the groups I know about and what they're doing now, if you don't want to read it, skip to the next paragraph ;p) I'll just quickly list the groups I know and like from back then and what happened to them: My favorite group from the 90s probably is Shinhwa, a six-member group that debuted under SM Entertainment in 1998, thus being the same age as I am. After 18 years, the six members are still together and promote as Shinhwa, having changed agencies a couple of times but never disbanding. I honestly love all six of them a lot and they're just all so special. And their music is seriously dope af and they are so freaking talented... I mean, there is a reason why they've been successful for 18 years... Other groups I really like but about which I don't know as much as about Shinhwa (probably because most of them disbanded and aren't active anymore) are g.o.d, H.O.T, Sechs Kies, S.E.S, Seo Taiji & Boys, Fin.K.L and Fly To The Sky. g.o.d was and still is a five member group, although the members mostly focus on solo activities, however, the band has not disbanded, even during their long hiatus from group activities. Park Joonhyung is currently in "A Look At Myself" on KBS starring as GOT7's Jackson's manager to reflect on his past self. Kim Taewoo has been releasing music over the past few years, the last release being "Lonely Funk" ft Jay Park (I think). Danny Ahn was pretty active on variety shows a few years ago but I honestly have no idea what he's up to now and I don't even know the names of the other two members... H.O.T was also an SM group, debuting in 1996 and consisting of five members and often being called the first real "boy group" in K-Pop. Moon Heejoon stars in various variety shows every now and then, also having been on the most recent episode of "Running Man" and Kangta continued as a solo artist after the band's disbandment in 2001. Tony An was on variety shows as well and once again, I don't even know the others names. (Sorry.) Sechs Kies was a six member group and was formed to be in competition with H.O.T. They were active from 1997 to 2000 and reunited this month for a concert initiated by MBC's "Infinity Challenge". I strongly advise you to watch the episode that features them because I loved it and thought it was hilarious. I only knew Eun Jiwon before last week, as he appeared on variety shows as well, but when I watched Infinity Challenge, I immediatly fell for Kang Sunghoon... *le sigh* And Lee Jaejin was simply hilarious... S.E.S was a three member girl group from SM and the members continued to appear on television after the disbandment in 2002. They, too, reunited for their 10-year anniversary as well as for a concert held by Infinity Challenge. All I know about Seo Taiji & Boys is that the YG CEO Yang Hyunsuk was a member and after last week's performance by the current King of Mask Singer, I now know exactly one song by Seo Taiji & Boys. Fin.K.L was the band Lee Hyori originally debuted in and that's all my knowledge on that as well... Fly To The Sky was and still is a duo who debuted under SM Entertainment. They released a mini album last year and both Brian and Hwanhee still appear in programs on TV, e.g. Brian acts as the host for "The Qmentary" on the 1theK Youtube Channel. But now (after a long long explanation that some of you probably have skipped...) I'll finally get to listing my favorite songs from the 90s and early 2000s. I know I probably know only a tenth of the groups that were popular back then, I know some more names but not many. For all of those who are interested, I recommend watching the Infinity Challenge Special "Saturday, Saturday's: I Am A Singer" ;) I'm currently watching that myself and it's just amazing... Also, if you like EXO, they did a program called "EXO 90:2014" where they filmed new music videos (one per member) for songs from the 90s and had singers and members from groups from that time as guests. Running Man had a special episode for the 5th anniversary which was a race with idols from the 90s. Links Infinity Challenge: Episode 402 (second half); Episode 403; Episode 409; Episode 410; Episode 411; Episode 476 (second half); Episode 477 airs on April 23 / sub available sometimes on the 24th. EXO 90:2014: Episode 1 (H.O.T); Episode 2 (g.o.d); Episode 3 (Shinhwa); Episode 4 (Jo Sungmo); Episode 5 (Fly To The Sky); Episode 6 (DJ DOC); Episode 7 (S.E.S); Episode 8 (Kim Minkyo); Episode 9 (BoA); Episode 10 (Lim Changjung); Episode 11 (Deux) Running Man: Episode 260; Episode 261 (first half) Shinhwa - Wild Eyes [2001] I just comment on each some very shortly: The beginning of this song is perfect and the dance - don't even get me started! I love this song so freaking much... H.O.T - Candy [1996] Candy is such a cute song, whenever I listen to it my mood just gets better. Also, the dance Moon Heejoon does for this one is probably the first thing most people associate with H.O.T. g.o.d - 어머님께 (To Mother) [1999] This is just such a beautiful song and I love it a lot. I don't even know what to say about it, it's just so perfect... Sechs Kies - 사나이 가는 길 (폼생폼사) [1997] I only found Sechs Kies not even a week ago but I fell in love with that band immediately. And this song is so great, I can't even believe I didn't know it before... Kim Gunmo - 잘못된 만남 (Wrongful Meeting) [1995] Whenever this song comes on I always start dancing... I love the beginning and the melody and Kim Gunmo's singing makes the whole song so perfect. This album is also the best-selling album #1 in Korea ever with 3.3 million copies sold.
